Namely, during the visit of U.S. state high officials, an explosion of the large cannon occurred, killing a significant number of people. The warship USS Princeton was at that time a sort of a technological marvel and the most modern ship of the U.S. Navy. WebOn February 27, 1844, some 100 Dominicans seized the fortress of Puerta del Conde in the city of Santo Domingo, and the following day the Haitian garrison surrendered. As these Haitian troops withdrew to the west side of the island, they pillaged and burned. In retaliation, Dominican gunboats bombarded Haitian ports.
