When ferritin is not elevated as an acute phase reactant, a value >30μg/L is normal. Ferritin can be as high as 100μg/L in adults and 150μg/L in children with iron deficiency and inflammation.
WebTo reach a diagnosis the three results should be interpreted together (see table below). Serum iron Serum iron measures the amount of iron in the blood. Normal serum iron: 60-170 mcg/dl (10-30 ?mol/L) Lower than normal levels may indicate: chronic gastrointestinal blood loss chronic heavy menstrual bleeding inadequate absorption of iron WebA total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) test measures the blood's ability to attach itself to iron and transport it around the body. A transferrin test is similar. If you have iron deficiency anaemia (a lack of iron in your blood), your iron level will be low but your TIBC will be high.
WebIn all people, a serum ferritin level of less than 30 micrograms/L confirms the diagnosis of iron deficiency. Ferritin levels can be difficult to interpret if infection or inflammation is present, as levels can be high even in the presence of iron deficiency. WebInterpretation of results requires knowledge of factors not related to iron status which can influence results, most notably acute inflammatory states.1 In general, it is wise to avoid checking iron studies if the C-reactive protein (CRP) is >10 mg/L.
